Holiday Cleaning Checklist: Get Your Home Guest-Ready
Between Thanksgiving dinner, December gatherings and out-of-town family, the holidays put more pressure on your home than any other time of year. The good news is you do not have to clean everything the night before. A holiday cleaning checklist broken into a simple timeline lets you spread the work over a few weeks, focus on what guests actually notice, and still have energy left to enjoy the people you invited. Here is how to get your home guest-ready, and how to reset it once the celebrations are over.
Your Holiday Cleaning Checklist Timeline
Start about four weeks before your first gathering. If Thanksgiving is your first event, that means beginning in late October or the first days of November. Hosting only in December? Shift everything forward.
Four weeks out: declutter and plan
- Decide which rooms guests will use: entry, living room, dining room, kitchen, guest bath and any guest bedroom
- Clear counters, tables and entry surfaces of mail, paperwork and everyday clutter
- Clean out the refrigerator and freezer to make room for holiday food
- Sort serving dishes, platters and tablecloths; wash anything dusty from storage
- Pull out holiday decorations and set aside anything broken or no longer used
- Book any outside help now, since the weeks before Thanksgiving and December holidays fill up fast
Two to three weeks out: deep clean the big stuff
This is the time for detail work that takes longer and that you will not want to touch the week of your event.
- Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, and the tops of cabinets and door frames
- Wipe baseboards and doors in the main living areas and hallways
- Degrease kitchen cabinet fronts, the range hood and backsplash
- Clean the oven before the heavy cooking starts
- Wash windows and mirrors in rooms guests will see
- Vacuum upholstery and under couch cushions
- Vacuum carpets and rugs thoroughly; if you want them professionally cleaned, schedule it now so they have time to dry
One week out: guest spaces
- Wash guest bedding and towels, and clear a drawer or a few hangers in the guest room
- Deep clean the guest bathroom: tub, shower glass, toilet, sink and floor
- Stock extra toilet paper, hand soap, tissues and a spare toothbrush
- Clear a coat closet or set up a coat rack and a spot for shoes by the door
- Put up decorations so the cleaning that follows does not get undone
Two to three days out: the guest-ready clean
- Vacuum and mop all floors in guest areas
- Clean and sanitize kitchen counters, sink and the outside of appliances
- Clean every bathroom guests may use
- Dust surfaces in the living and dining rooms
- Take out trash and recycling, and start with empty bins
- Run and empty the dishwasher so it is ready for the first load
Day of: the 30-minute touch-up
- Wipe the guest bathroom sink, mirror and toilet seat, and put out fresh hand towels
- Quick sweep or vacuum of the entry and kitchen
- Clear the counters you will use for serving
- Set out an empty trash bag and a recycling bin where guests can find them
- Light a candle or open a window briefly to freshen the air
Guest-Ready Priorities: What People Actually Notice
If time runs short, focus here. Guests rarely look inside your closets, but they always notice these:
- The entry. It is the first impression. Clear shoes and clutter, clean the door glass and put down a fresh mat.
- The guest bathroom. A clean toilet, spotless sink and mirror, fresh towels and plenty of supplies matter more than any decoration.
- The kitchen. Everyone gathers here. Clean counters, a clean sink and a fresh-smelling trash can go a long way.
- Smells. Take out trash often, clean pet areas and run the disposal with cold water to keep odors down.
- Seating areas. Vacuum couches, fluff pillows and make sure there is a clear spot to set down a drink.
Keeping the House Under Control During the Holidays
Between events, a few habits keep you from starting over every time:
- Run the dishwasher every night, even if it is not full
- Do a 10-minute reset each evening: counters, entry, living room
- Keep a basket by the stairs for items that need to go up
- Wipe spills right away, especially on carpet and upholstery
- Have overnight guests strip their bed on the last morning so laundry starts right away
The Post-Holiday Reset
When the last guest leaves, give yourself a day, then work through this list over a weekend.
- Wash all guest bedding, towels and table linens
- Clean out the refrigerator and toss leftovers that have been there too long
- Clean the oven and stovetop after the heavy cooking
- Vacuum thoroughly to pick up pine needles, glitter and crumbs
- Take down and pack decorations carefully, labeling bins for next year
- Recycle gift boxes and packaging, and find homes for new items
- Declutter toys and clothes to make room for gifts

Frequently Asked Questions
How far ahead should I start holiday cleaning?
About four weeks before your first event. That gives you time to declutter, deep clean and prepare guest spaces without cramming it all into one weekend.
What should I clean first before guests arrive?
The guest bathroom, kitchen and entry. Those are the spaces every guest sees and uses, so they have the biggest impact.
When should I book a professional cleaning for the holidays?
As early as you can. Schedule a deep clean for two to three weeks before your event and book in October or early November, since holiday dates go quickly.
