The Complete Move-In Cleaning Checklist for a Fresh Start

Freshly cleaned empty home ready for move-in day

A home can look clean on a walkthrough and still hold months of dust, grease and grime in the places you will use most. Whether you are renting an apartment or buying a house, a move-in cleaning checklist lets you clean the empty space once, properly, before your belongings cover it up. Below is a room-by-room list you can print, plus a few notes on what renters and buyers should each watch for.

Why Clean Before You Unpack

An empty home is the easiest home you will ever clean. There are no couches to move, no dishes in the cabinets and no rugs over the floors. Once the boxes arrive, the inside of drawers, the floor under the bed and the shelf above the washer become hard to reach for years. Cleaning first also means you know exactly what is touching your dishes, your clothes and your kids' toys.

Even when a previous tenant or seller cleaned before leaving, the standard varies. A quick wipe-down often skips cabinet interiors, appliance gaskets, vents and baseboards.

Before You Start: Supplies and Order

  • Work top to bottom. Dust ceiling fans, vents and the tops of cabinets first, then counters, then floors last so falling dust gets picked up.
  • Work back to front. Start in the room farthest from the door and finish at the entry.
  • Basic supplies: all-purpose cleaner, degreaser, bathroom cleaner, glass cleaner, microfiber cloths, a scrub brush, a vacuum with attachments, a mop and bucket, trash bags and a step stool.
  • Check that utilities are on. You will need water, hot water and power for the vacuum.

Room-by-Room Move-In Cleaning Checklist

Kitchen

  • Empty and wipe every cabinet and drawer, inside and out, including shelf edges and hinges
  • Clean the refrigerator: shelves, crisper drawers, door bins and the rubber door seals
  • Clean the oven interior, racks and door glass, and the drawer below
  • Degrease the stovetop, burner grates or drip pans, knobs and range hood filter
  • Clean inside the microwave and dishwasher; check the dishwasher filter area
  • Scrub the sink, faucet and around the drain and disposal
  • Wipe the countertops and backsplash
  • Wipe light switches, cabinet pulls and the pantry shelves
  • Sweep and mop, including under the toe kicks and along the edges

Bathrooms

  • Scrub the tub, shower walls and glass to remove soap scum and hard-water film
  • Clean grout and caulk; note any mold or mildew to report or repair
  • Clean the toilet completely: bowl, seat hinges, base and behind the tank
  • Empty and wipe the vanity, drawers and medicine cabinet
  • Polish the mirror, faucets and fixtures
  • Dust the exhaust fan cover and light fixtures
  • Mop the floor, getting into corners and behind the toilet

Bedrooms

  • Wipe closet shelves and rods, and vacuum the closet floor
  • Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures and air vents
  • Clean window sills, tracks and blinds
  • Wipe baseboards, door frames, doors and handles
  • Vacuum carpets slowly, especially along walls and in corners

Living areas, hallways and entry

  • Dust fans, light fixtures, vents and any built-in shelving
  • Wipe light switches, outlet covers, thermostats and door handles
  • Clean baseboards and stair railings
  • Clean the inside of windows and sliding door tracks
  • Vacuum or mop all floors, including under where furniture will sit

Laundry room, garage and extras

  • Wipe the washer drum and door gasket, and the dryer drum and lint area
  • Sweep behind and beside the machines if you can reach
  • Wipe shelves in linen closets and storage rooms
  • Sweep the garage and entry so dirt is not tracked in on moving day

Notes for Renters

  • Document before you clean. Photograph each room, the inside of appliances, and any stains, damage or dirt you find. Note them on the move-in condition form your landlord provides. This protects your deposit when you move out.
  • Report problems in writing. Leaks, pests, mold, or appliances that do not work are repair issues, not cleaning issues, and belong with your landlord or property manager.
  • Know the move-out standard now. Our guide to what landlords expect at move-out shows what you will be asked to leave behind.

Notes for Home Buyers

  • Plan the clean between closing and moving day if you can. Even a single day with the house empty makes a big difference.
  • Replace or check HVAC filters and dust the return vents, since construction dust or a previous owner's pets can leave build-up.
  • Look beyond cleaning. Change the locks, test smoke detectors and note any repairs while the house is empty. Our home buying checklist covers the rest of the move-in timeline.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a move-in clean take?

It depends on the size of the home and how it was left. A small apartment may take a few hours on your own, while a larger house that was not cleaned well can take a full day or more. A professional team usually finishes in a single visit.

Should I clean before or after the movers come?

Before, whenever possible. Cleaning an empty home is faster and more thorough, and you can reach inside cabinets and closets before they fill up.

What do people forget on a move-in cleaning checklist?

Refrigerator door seals, the oven drawer, cabinet interiors, window tracks, air vents, the washer gasket and the tops of door frames are the most commonly missed spots.
